Overfitting

Overfitting is a common issue in machine learning (ML), and refers to the scenario where a model is overly complex and has a poor generalization ability. It occurs when a model is trained on a limited amount of data, and has learned patterns that are specific to that particular dataset, rather than general patterns that would be applicable to new, unseen data. As a result, the model is able to make accurate predictions on the training data, but is unable to generalize to new, unseen data, and performs poorly on validation or test datasets.

Regularization, cross-validation, and early stopping are a few strategies that can be used to stop or lessen overfitting. The process of regularization entails making the objective function of the model simpler by including a penalty term. The process of cross-validation entails folding the data into various groups and training and assessing the model on each fold. A strategy called early stopping involves keeping an eye on the model's performance during training and interrupting the process when the performance on the validation dataset starts to decline.
