Location Intelligence

Encord Computer Vision Glossary

Location intelligence (LI) is the process of deriving meaningful insights from geospatial data to support decision-making across business, government, and scientific sectors. It combines spatial analysis, geographic information systems (GIS), and data visualization to answer location-based questions and optimize operations.

At its core, location intelligence connects "where" something happens with "why" and "what action" should be taken. By layering geographic data (e.g., satellite imagery, customer addresses, infrastructure maps) with other datasets (demographics, sales, IoT data), organizations gain a deeper understanding of spatial patterns and relationships.

Use cases of location intelligence include:

  • Retail site selection: Choosing store locations based on customer density and competitor proximity.
  • Logistics optimization: Route planning and supply chain analysis.
  • Urban planning: Infrastructure development and zoning decisions.
  • Insurance and risk modeling: Flood zone assessment, asset exposure analysis.

Location intelligence platforms like Esri, Carto, and Google Maps Platform offer tools for geospatial visualization, spatial joins, proximity analysis, and real-time data tracking.

As more businesses embrace data-driven strategies, location intelligence is becoming a core component of digital transformation—enabling smarter, more precise decisions tied to geography.
